Finding Files

 

Windows Vista

     

Oops you lost a file? Perhaps you can't remember the file name, and all you recall is the subject of a file. No problem...

 

To find a file

  1. Click Start

Click Image for example:  FAQ_Vista_1.jpg (47837 bytes)

  1. Without clicking on anything, just start typing what you are looking for.  

Example: type disk and it will show you the closest matches.

Click Image for example:  FAQ_Vista_2.jpg (32487 bytes)

  1. Do the same for a partial name of the file you are looking for and give it time to locate all options.  The image below shows you options from Programs, Favorites and History and Files.

  1. Click on the file you lost

If the search has completed and you don't see the correct file, click on Search Everywhere and do an advanced search.

 

Advanced Search

  1. Click on Search Everywhere

  1. Choose a file type for a more refined search and then click Advanced Search

  1. Click the Arrow for Location and choose Local Hard Drives

  1. Enter as much of the file name as you can remember and click Search.

  1. Click on your file in the results pane
